(Thomson Reuters, Sept 11 2012) Peugeot has failed to keep pace as other global automakers have consolidated their recovery in recent years; its profitability woes may simply grow if credit rating agencies slash their ratings on its debt.
Operating profit margins for the automotive industry began to stabilize in early 2010, after covering a lot of bumpy ground during the post-crisis recession and spending 2009 in negative territory. Today, in aggregate, those margins have rebounded from -4% to hover around 7% to 8% - with the exception of French automaker Peugeot S.A., that is. After a more muted recovery that took its operating profit margins only as high as 3% in 2010, that figure for Peugeot's trailing two semiannual reporting periods has fallen once more, and currently hovers at zero. That is one of the reasons for the plunge in Peugeot's net income, which became a net loss of 819 million euros in the semi-annual period ended June 30, 2012. [...]

(Reuters, Sept 29 2012) Marchionne keeps ACEA presidency after VW spat. Fiat SpA (FIA.MI) Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said he had not quit as president of European carmakers' association ACEA, after Germany's Volkswagen AG called for him to go. The spat has highlighted growing tensions over fierce price competition in the slumping European car market. A sparring match between the pair began with remarks Marchionne made in July about the German carmaker, which has been clawing business from smaller rivals in Europe. Marchionne accused Volkswagen in a newspaper interview of being too aggressive and undercutting competitors. In response, Volkswagen, whose European market share reached 25 percent in the January-August compared with 11.9 percent for number two PSA Peugeot Citroen (PEUP.PA), called for Marchionne to quit as president of the lobby group [...]

(Bloomberg, Sept 26 2012) Italy sold six-month bills at the lowest rate since March as the European Central Bank's pledge to buy debt of distressed euro-region countries led to a plunge in borrowing costs. The Italian Treasury sold 9 billion euros ($11.6 billion) of 181-day bills at a rate of 1.503 percent, down from 1.585 percent at the last auction of similar-maturity debt on Aug. 29. Investors bid for 1.39 times the amount of bills offered, down from 1.69 times last month.
Italian 10-year bond yields have dropped more than 100 basis points since ECB President Mario Draghi first signalled on Aug. 2 that the central bank was willing to buy bonds of euro-region countries to bring down borrowing costs. Draghi's new bond-buying program will work in tandem with debt-purchases by the EU's bailout funds and impose conditions on any government making a request.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, who championed the idea of the EU's rescue funds buying bonds, has said that Italy doesn't plan to request aid for now. Italy's 10-year bond yield rose 10 basis points to 5.197 percent at 11:07 a.m. in Rome, leaving the difference with comparable maturity German bunds at 367 basis points [...]

Introduction

Dear Expert,
Thank you very much for taking time out to fill up this survey. Before you proceed, please read this page as we have tried to answer some important questions you may have about this survey.

What is this survey about?

Just imagine a software that gives you hints on when the market is likely to go up or crash dramatically. Wouldn't it be helpful to get an indication of whether what you have read on internet is more likely to be a rumour than a fact? Wouldn't it be useful to know what happened to the market when similar things had happened in the past? Would you like to know what other investors are thinking and what it means from the perspective of movements in stock market?

We, at Eurokleis (EK), are involved in a European funded research project, TrendMiner, that is trying to understand the impact of news on stock markets and develop a software that gives answers to the questions such as listed above.

However, to do so, we need your help. We request you to give answers to a few simple questions that will help us to develop how investors rate and distinguish between a good and a bad news from the investment perspective.

Why should I fill up this survey?

We strongly believe that the decisions made by investors, like you, are at the core of any movement seen in stock markets. We also believe that these decisions made by investors are highly influenced by various news or rumours that they read or hear. With your help, we are trying to understand how investors react to different news' stories and how they change their investment strategies. Your answers will be used to understand investors' behaviour and develop a software that will allow us to make better investments' decisions in the future.

Do I need to provide any personal details?

No, your answers are collected anonymously and treated likewise. No information about you will be used for commercial or solicitation purposes. It will not be disclosed to third parties except in aggregate form and through scientific publications.

How long will it take me to fill up this survey?

From 10 to 15 minutes at most.

How is the survey organised?

The survey has three sections:
  • Investor's profiling
  • Investor's behaviour
  • Investor's reaction to news articles

The first section collects information about the investor filling up this survey. In the second section we ask general questions about your investment strategies. Finally, in the third section, we will present four news stories and ask you to tell us your reaction.

The TrendMiner staff thanks you again for participating!
